Monfort Castle
Montfort Loop (or Montfort Cingle) is one of the most famous meanders in the Dordogne. It is a unique bend in the river, describing an almost perfect arc of a circle. On the rocky promontory on the outer edge of the loop stands Montfort Castle. It was the home of Simon de Montfort who was here to wage his early 13th Century crusade against the Cathar heretics (more commonly known as the Albigensian Crusade). This area is less than 10 miles from where we stayed in Cenac.
